Gay and Gay Friendly Lodging

CAN WE SUGGEST A PLACE TO STAY ?

The obvious answer is... SURE! If we had our way it would be at OUR HOUSE…but it is usually FULL!

In the Ft. Lauderdale area, there are over 30 gay and gay friendly places to stay. BUT, which ONE is BEST?

THERE IS NO ONE PLACE THAT IS BEST!

Where to stay depends on YOU and WHOMEVER you are coming with … or not! It’s all about YOU and what YOU are looking for and what BEST fits your style.

Some criteria are:

• Clientele & Options
• Location
• Price
• Energy

CLIENTELE & OPTIONS

• All gay men: TOTALLY “OUT”
• All gay women: TOTALLY “OUT”
• Mixed gay men and gay women: Out and a considerate atmosphere for both men and women
• Gay friendly (mixed gay and straight): We'll sometimes refer to these places as "All Welcome" - gay and straight
• Mostly straight: Traveling with Mom and Dad
• Clothing optional throughout most of the property: Come, strip down, leave the polo shirt and jeans packed away and enjoy being naked and free!
• Has a clothing optional area: PEEKING is ALLOWED but probably really means that the neighbors can see into the rest of the property.
• Not clothing optional at all: “I am coming for vacation not bodies!”

LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION

This is probably the most misunderstood of all the criteria - especially for our "virgin" visitors. Fort Lauderdale is spread out over a large geographic area - and the same is true for gay lodging, bars, restaurants and shopping. There is no one place where you can stay and walk to all of it.

So, unless you plan on staying naked poolside during your entire visit and having food delivered to your deck chair, you will need some type of transportation - car, cab, trick's moped....

You basically have these two lodging location options:

Within walking distance to the beach - only. This is where you want to be if you're mainly here to enjoy the surf and sand in your shorts - and the views at Terramar and Sebastian St. Beaches. There are just a few decent restaurants in this area but shopping and dining on Las Olas are just a few miles away.

More centrally located to everything - beach, shopping, dining and of course the gay bars and clubs. This is the popular option for those that want their visit to be more "hassle-free." Everything is accessible - but with shorter distances to come and go.

PRICE

• Luxury with Amenities and Facilities / Large Guestrooms and Suites: --- $159 and up per night

• Inexpensive / Usually standard room Only --- $89.00 and up per night

• Most of the larger resorts have several categories of room types and sizes.

The ranges that I'm showing here are for Off-Season periods. Expect about a $50 - $80 difference in price based on the time of year that you visit.

Generally, Off-Season is from early May to mid-December. Peak Season is from mid-December through early May. There is truly no really slow time though. Reservations are recommended year round now!

ENERGY!

Yes, we're referring to SEXUAL ENERGY.

 If you're looking for lots of playtime - yes, sex... may I suggest that you find a nice comfortable place to stay but spend much of your time in one of our two fun bath houses. This way, you get the best of both worlds and have stories that you can tell your best friend and your Mom!

Medium --- Acceptable to do whatever, as long as the explicit stuff is confined to your room during the day. At night, anything is possible (this characterizes most of our guest houses and resorts.  Personally, my experience is that you:

1. Create your own sexual experiences
2. Bring your own sexual partner(s)
3. Get out and find your partners and experiences

Low – Need to make up with LOVER and/or don’t need competition? These are the places that emphasize couples and finer surroundings. You'll more likely see a catered meal in a suite than an orgy.

The TYPE of Establishment

BED and BREAKFAST (Guest House) --- with a type of continental breakfast included in the morning and sometimes a happy hour in the afternoon. Each establishment has it's own personality...and that's where the matching of your style with theirs is helpful. Also, each offers a wide variety of amenities - from the very basic to pure pampering..... from budget, no frills to moderate and comfortable all the way up to GAY LUXURY!

FULL AMENITIES RESORT/HOTEL ---- Room Service, Bars, restaurants and all the amenities offered by many larger, commercial resorts and luxury chain hotels. We have most of them here but Orbitz/Travelocity is a better expert on these than I am.

CHAIN OR GAY HOTEL /MOTEL --- Standard rooms and amenities, in other words – STANDARD... with few if any extras. These can be a bargain for those who just want a bed and bath.

APARTMENT/ VACATION RENTAL – When you're staying longer and have the urge to COOK and have lots of space. Great for those on extended holidays or are relocating to the area. Depending on the time of year, economically, this category could include some of the Guest Houses that have suites and apartments.

Guest Houses vs. Chain Hotels

In chatting with and emailing folks that are planning their vacations, I find that most are more familiar with standard chain hotels than the benefits and advantages of staying in one of Ft. Lauderdale's wonderful gay guest houses. Here's a list of what I consider the advantages:

Personality - and each guesthouse has one! Depending on the property and the mix of guests, it can be anything from a group that wants to do joint activities or hang around the pool together to quiet and more privately relaxed.

Nudity - I don't know of any chain hotel that allows nudity or has a clothing optional area. Most of our guest houses are very accommodating in this area.

Location! Pick your location based on what you think your main activities will be: Beach, Shopping, Bar Hopping? ... Everything!  If there is one thing that needs the most explanation to our "virgin" visitors, it's Location.  Go to our "Location, Location" section to get more information on this important topic.

Price - surprisingly, after a check of what's being offered by some of the on-line reservation services versus calling local guest houses, the rates are OFTEN lower at many guest house. Add in breakfast and more and you have a real deal!

Famiies - with screaming kids, strollers and an atmosphere where you need to watch what you say and do - NOT found in our all adult gay guest houses!! So, consider staying at one of our personal and affordable gay guest houses or resorts on your next visit to Ft. Lauderdale!
