Getting Around to it All

After you get to Fort Lauderdale, you'll need to know how to get around town! It's a big area - you'll need to know which modes of transportation are best and then how to navigate the lay of the land.

Walking vs. Driving:

This is probably the biggest issue (aside from getting laid) for virgin visitors to the area. First off, for anyone who has visited a town like Key West or a city like Washington DC, this is NOT a walking town. Everything is located in little pocket neighborhoods which can be miles apart.

Gay Accomodations:

The area with the largest collection of Gay Guest Houses and Resorts is the Beach/Oceanfront area. From any of the gay accommodations in that area, you can walk to the beach and to a few restaurants. However, here are some distances to other things that might interest you:

From the Beach/Oceanfront Area to:
Miles Away
KM Away
Closest Gay Bar 3 4.8
The Galleria Mall 2.5 4.0
Las Olas Blvd. Shops & Restaurants 4.0 6.4
Wilton Manors Gay Bars, Restaurants & Shops 3-6 4.8-9.7
Fort Lauderdale International Airport 6.0 9.7

There are other gay accommodations that we classify as "more centrally located." These are located within a mile or two of the beach and closer to the gay bars, shopping and dining throughout the area. Some have a little of each within walking distance, but you'll still need some type of transportation to make getting around easier for you.

The Naked Concierge can custom design a map, just for YOU showing you where the places to stay that best suit your needs are located - relative to the other activities that are important to you.

Transportation:

So, as you can see, you'll need some type of transportation. If you fly into any of the airports, rental cars are readily available. I suggest making a reservation ahead of time - it pretty much guarantees that a car will be there for you and it cuts down on some of the hassles upon arrival

If for some reason you don't have a car and don't want to rent one, Cabs/Vans/Sedans and Limos are available. You can get cabs and shuttle vans at the airport, have your guesthouse or hotel call for one and our favorite bartenders are especially talented at getting them to take you home or to the next bar!

You can also pre-arrange to have a private Sedan or Limo pick you up and take you to your destination. This is actually pretty affordable.

Please note: Drinking and Driving is taken very seriously here! If you've had more than a couple of our very strong cocktails, get a cab back to where you're staying! The small cost is well worth the incredible hassles of a DUI....nuff said.

The Naked Concierge has partnered with Thrifty to offer you a corporate discount. Click on this banner for a rate quote:

Input the appropriate airport code:
Fort Lauderdale = FLL
Miami = MIA
Orlando = MCO
Key West = EYW

We have also partnered with Enterprise Rental Car - Contact the Naked Concierge for a rate quote with Enterprise - the company that picks you up!

Other Ways of Getting Around:

Many of the neighborhoods in which you can stay are walking and bike friendly. If you're an avid biker, you can get from Wilton Manors, Victoria Park and Oakland Park to the beach. Of course the beach area guest houses are within walking distance to not only the sand but also several nice restaurants along the strip.

The Water Taxi is considered transportation but I see it as much of a tour as transportation. For just $11, you can ride all day from as far south as the 17th Street Causeway, up to Riverwalk and Las Olas' Museums and shops, the Beach and to The Galleria. Plan one full day for this unique way of exploring! Or use it for a romantic change of pace way to go to dinner!

Are We Lost Yet?

You have your car and you're ready to head out... but all those roads!

Don't fret! Ft. Lauderdale is laid out in a grid so as long as you have a good idea in which quadrant you want to go, you'll be fine.

Here's a pretty simple view of how it works:

As shown above, the streets that form the four sections are Broward Blvd (running East/West) and Andrews Avenue (running North/South). This creates the NW, SW, SE, NE designations that you'll see on many addresses.

I've listed a few of the major things located in each section above

Try to remember:

Avenues, Terraces and Ways run North/South
Streets and Courts run East/West

If you add in the numbered streets and avenues, you'll never get lost!

For example, if you're trying to find:

908 NE 15th Avenue

You can figure out that your address is north of Broward, East of Andrews and between 9th and 10th Street.

There are a couple of good ones available locally but be careful - businesses listed on them come and go quickly here! The streets, however tend to remain pretty constant.
